Wii TMNT Fighter Announced, Smash Designers Involved

ccording to various sources, Nintendo Power magazine reports Ubisoft is publishing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting game for Wii set to release in September 2009. Some members who worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl are developing the title as well as former members of Team Ninja (who worked on the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series).

“While this is a licensed game, it’s not tied to any movie or TV show,” an Ubisoft producer said. “For this game to succeed on its own, it needs to be a great game.”

Official development started January 2008. Details include: 2.5D fighter, interactive stages, 4-player versus matches, story mode, battle royal, tournament mode, and online play. Ubisoft also said online play will be better than the implementation seen in Brawl.

Konami tried its hand at a TMNT fighter back on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis years ago. Reviews were decent at best. Although we probably haven’t seen a stellar TMNT game for over 15 years, this apparent all-star development team can give us all hope of something great. That’s reason enough to “Cowabunga!”
