BioWare, Lucasarts Unveil Star Wars: The Old Republic

t a press conference today, BioWare and Lucasarts officially revealed that another RPG set in the Star Wars universe is currently in development. Titled Star Wars: The Old Republic, the game is an MMO that will be published by EA. It’s being developed specifically by BioWare Austin, and is set 300 years after the events of the first two Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic titles and 3,500 years before the movies. BioWare’s Ray Muzyka says that story will be a large part of the game—something that’s often been compromised in MMO titles of the past. It’s also being designed to be accessible to new players who might not be completely familiar with the Star Wars setting (speak up, if you’re out there!).

Gameplay wasn’t shown at the announcement, though a quick trailer was screened featuring a CG Jedi and Sith battling it out.

Players won’t have to go it alone, since they’ll be traveling with groups of AI companions. Depending upon the choices players make (light side versus dark side, for example), those characters will change, too. Both the Sith Empire and Galactic Republic will be featured as playable factions, with each of those supporting various classes.

Other details are obviously scarce at this stage. Things like the game’s release window and what platforms will support it are still unknown. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open and will let you know more as information is made available.
